Data Protection – Data Protection Policy - Information Commissioner's Office – Personal Data – Private Investigators

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) on 5 August 2010 stated that some private investigators have failed to notify the privacy watchdog that they are handling individual’s personal data. A number of private investigators process individual’s personal data including information about their home lives, financial data and their images. They are required under the Data Protection Act 1998 to notify the ICO if they are processing personal data such as storing, accessing or using such personal data. Around 1,626 private investigators have notified the ICO. The ICO has written to the Association of British Investigators, World Association of Professional Investigators and the Institute of Professional Investigators asking the industry to take note of their legal responsibilities when handling personal data.
