Our client, a medical student, had a single drink during an evening out. Whilst driving home from the night out, our client was stopped by the police. Our client was breathalysed, taken to the police station and charged. Our client was over the limit from a single drink. The police later confirmed that our client was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Disclosure to Medical School
Our client duly reported the incident to the medical school.
Criminal Case
Our client was summonsed to appear in court and pleaded guilty to the charge. The court banned our client from driving for a period.
Investigation meeting
Our client informed the medical school of the court ruling. Following the court decision the University conducted its own investigation. RT Coopers accompanied our client to the investigation meeting.
Referred to a Fitness to Practise Panel
Our client was referred to a Fitness to Practise Panel on the recommendation of the investigator.
Preparation of statement – Representation at FtP hearing
RT Coopers assisted our client in the preparation of the statement for the FtP hearing, addressing concerns raised around GMC’s Good Medical Practice guidelines.
On the day of the FtP hearing, our client was prepared for the FtP hearing and represented on the day by RT Coopers.
Outcome
Our client was allowed to progress with no penalties and with minimum conditions imposed.
Commentary
