Smart Metering - Legal Update

Energy Law - Smart Metering Implementation Programme, Smart Metering for Non-Domestic Customers

On 21 February 2013, the Government launched its Smart Metering Implementation Programme which it intends to roll to the domestic and smaller non-domestic sectors. The Government hopes that by implementing the Programme for the roll-out of smart meters, this would play a key role in the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy. The aim is to get as close as possible to achieving the long-term challenges in this area so that the UK has affordable, secure and sustainable energy supplies.

The Implementation Programme has set out two implementation phases for the implementation of smart meters:

·        the Foundation Stage which began in April 2011; and
·        the Mass Roll-out which would begin in late 2014 and completed by the end of 2019.
