Legal Updates - Data Protection Breach

Data Protection – Monetary Penalty – Government Department – Breach of Data Protection

The Information Commissioner’s Office (“ICO”) recently imposed a monetary penalty of £185,000 on a Government department, after a filing cabinet containing personal information of victims of a terrorist incident was sold at auction. Amongst other things, the information included details about injuries suffered by the victims as well as the amounts of compensation offered.

The data protection breach occurred as a result of a relocation of office for the department.
