At the end of June 2013, the UK Government announced the introduction of a new police unit aimed at targeting intellectual property crime.

The purpose of the unit is to tackle online piracy and other forms of intellectual property crime such as counterfeit goods.

The announcement confirmed that the unit will receive £2.5 million in funding over two years from the Intellectual Property Office. It also confirmed that the unit is to be set up and run by the City of London Police.

The new unit is expected to be functional in September 2013.
